Using a computer and navigating the Internet have become essential skills. The 4th Street Lab is delighted to have a Microsoft Unlimited Potential Grant that gives us the software and the curriculum to make computer education available to everyone in the community. "Basics" classes for new computer users will be offered monthly. Other classes will be offered from time to time. If you have a suggestion for a class or want to schedule sessions for your organization, please let us know.

SunflowerIntroduction to Computers

This beginner class goes from turning the computer on to finding files and documents. In between you will learn some basic vocabulary, how to use a mouse, navigating with Window XP, and managing your files. Cost: $18 for the series of classes.


SunflowerExploring the Internet

A beginner level class where you will explore the web to find out what is available; learn how to search effectively; download and manage information; and keep your personal information safe. Cost: $18.00 series or $6 per class.

Introduction to Email

Students will set up a free Yahoo email account, learn how to access their account, set up the address book within their account, and how to compose, send, open, print, save, forward, and delete email messages. Students will also lear to create folders, save drafts, open and send attachments and use security settings. Cost: $18.00

Touch Typing Made Easy

In today's comuterized world, typing skills have become essential. With that fact in mind, we have created a program where students can learn touch-typing at their own pace in a fun, relaxing environment. This series provides a combination of ergonomic and typing fundamental training, instructor support, and individual study. Cost: $25.00

Sunflower MS Word

WordProcessing Basics

In this beginner level class you will learn how to create, print and save basic documents, use Word editing tools, and use various fonts, text sizes and colors to create attractive pages . Cost: $18.00 series or $6 per class.

Using Graphics in MS Word

Students will learn how to enhance word documents with clipart, pictures, and borders plus create flyers and newsletters. Bring your favorite photographs or other images to class and enhance the fun by learning simple scanning techniques to copy them and insert them into your creations!Cost: $30.00.

Customizing a Document in MS Word

This 3-hour class will provide students with the necessary tools to customize a document in Microsoft Word. Students will learn how to adjust page margins, set paragraph alignment, indentation and spacing. Plus, they will learn how to change indents, insert and clear tabs, add page numbers, create headers and footers, and change the page orientation of a document from portrait to landscape. 15.00

Introduction to Excel

Through this introductory class, students will learn the sklills necessary to create spreadsheets, format their document and perform basic calculations. Cost: $18.00 series or $6 per class.

Calculations and Functions with Excel

In this intermediate level class, students will learn how to format cells, change print options, work with rows, columns worksheets, and workbooks, perform basic calculations, and use basic financial and logical functions using MS Excel Spreadsheets. Cost: $30

Charts, Graphs and Pivot Tables with Excel

Using charts and graphs is an effective way to help people get the point when you are presenting information. Learn to use Excel's powerful tools to create, modify and format charts and how to create and use pivot tables to analyze data. The prerequisites for this class are knowledge of fundamental Excel operations, including entry of data and formulas, autofill, relative and absolute cell references, and worksheet formatting. Cost: $30

Get your creative juices flowing and have fun while learning to create calendars, flyers and business cards in Microsoft Publisher. Bring your favority photographs or other images to class and enhance the fun by learning simple scanning techniques to copy them and insert them into your creations!. Cost: $30

PowerPoint

Learn everything you need to knowabout putting together persuasive electronic presentations creating basic slide shows to adding graphics and animation for rich multimedia presentations. Cost: $30

FlowerOn-Line Safety

Protect your computer against viruses, worms, and trojan horses. Find out if there are spies in your computer and get them out of there! Understand Firewalls and how to install a free one for your protection and peace of mind. Students will receive a CD with all of the free software that they need and instructions for installation and set up.

ArtichokeXHTML Basics

Students will create their own web pages using both Notepad and an HTML Editor to wrote simple code. Principles of Webpage design will be discussed, as well as the different kinds and uses of HTML editing software available to website designers. By the end of the class all students will have published a simple web page to the Internet.

Digital Storytelling

Digital Storytelling is a process of using scraps of multimedia materials such as snapshots, music clips and other memorabilia from our lives, and combining them with our own words on a computer to create a unique story. Each digital story is a three to four minute media clip that is typically viewed on a computer screen, a television or movie screen. Whether it is about your family, your organization, or a community event, you will be learning an effective way to way to tell your story.
